Biographical counselling in YIP
By: Annie Meijer
Many young people today live a concentrated biography. In our globalised society, where all the challenges and atrocities of the world can be viewed at the press of a tab
and where the faculty to feel into the suffering of the other is arriving with increasing speed, a sense of urgency has developed which threatens to leave the inner world of the human being with an emptiness and sense of helplessness. On the other hand, the youth of our times are bringing the capacities and faculties of consciousness, spiritual insight, courage and strength of will in the face of adversity necessary to carry humanity into the next and challenging phase of development.
Biographical counselling offers the opportunity to give reverential attention to the occurrences and incidents of our lives in the warmth of human encounter enabling a sense for the deeper meaning and purpose of our life to be felt. In the outer world of increasing insecurity it is vital that we develop a new sense of ground from within based on the realisation of our worth, dignity and freedom as human beings. Biographical counselling in YIP aims to support the participants on this journey. It encourages the participants to step into dialogue with their own biography in order to reach through to the truth of their own developing being and find renewed confidence and creativity for the future.
In gaining both a more detailed insight and broader understanding of our individual paths our sense of self and realm of responsibility and capability can become clear enabling us to move from a feeling of weakness to a feeling of strength and ability. In this way we can feel at home in the world and learn to find and value the contributions we make.
This conscious work on our own biography enables us to develop the capacity to understand the life stories of others and thus to build bridges towards them.
