A YIP Christmas happens twice
More than 20 people attended the YIP christmas celebration. Some were YIP-ies, others were friends and family visiting for the occasion.
Naturally, there were two christmases: a Swedish and an Anglo-Saxon.
Swedish Christmas
The Swedes celebrate christmas on the evening of 24 December with an elaborate meal of meats, cured fish and vegetables, followed by Rice Cream. A rice pudding made from Rice Porridge and Whipped Cream. Hidden in the mix is a whole almond. The person who finds the almond receives a special gift.
Before the meal there was time for christmas songs and drinking Glögg, a special Christmas Toddy.
The gifts were delivered by Jultomten, the Swedish Santa Claus shortly after dinner, and everyone gathered in the candle-lit room, by the christmas tree. It was cold outside, so a fire was made in the open fireplace.
Intermezzo
Christmas Day arrived slowly, some not waking until after noon, having played games far into the night. There were two birthdays as well as christmas, and a pancake breakfast had been scheduled. It ended up more as a late lunch – but was a great start to the day.
Anglo-Saxon Christmas
The Anglo-Saxon Christmas celebration started some time after nightfall, at 1630h. It began with another elaborate meal; turkey, eggnog and more. Though missing the smell of barbecue and the presence of sandflies, even the Kiwis and Aussies were content.
After the meal, more gifts were opened and cake consumed, until everyone felt they could have no more food.
